Oscar with chicken pox
(Last updated 2/1/03)
Three spots first appeared on Boxing Day.
Clare took him to the doctor on Dec 27 and was very suprised to find out it was chicken pox!
Oscar has a slight fever so we get some pamol to control it.
Dec 28: they started get more obviously spread but Oscar was still smiling and not paying
that much attention to them until the evening when he wouldn't sleep easily until totally exhausted.

Dec 29: They get much worse. The sores end up; up his nose, on his eyelid, in his bottom, around his privates,
where the nappies rub, in his ear, etc, etc. Oscar is in pain and the fever gets quite high. Although Oscar isn't in control of his hands
enough yet to scratch purposely, flaying arms can scrape them and send him into huge crying
fits - not what you need when you've got a fever and probably a headache too.
Oscar is extremely unhappy and will only sleep when in peoples arms and not his cot as he usually does.
Clare stays up the night with him, feeding him to sleep in her arms.
Dec 30: We go to the Doctor again about the fever and he is put in brufen because pamol isn't
controlling the temperature ( he gets to 39.3oC). We go back to the Doctor again to
check his temperature has gone down which it had.
Once again he screams if put in his cot so he has has to be rocked off to sleep and then stay in our
arms to get any sleep.
Dec 31: Oscar won't feed we got to the Doctor again and find he has sores in his mouth, we try
using bonjella which works once but then he developes a real dislike for it. Oscar's blister
start scabbing over. It looks worse because they are darker but it is actually getting better.
Oscar sleeps well in his cot.

Jan 1: Go to the After hours surgery for to check Oxygen levels get him weighed and
lungs listened to etc. Our Doctor gave us a note to take with us since his practice
wasn't open on New Year's day.
We thought he was well on the road to recovery after a good nights sleep although he didn't feed well
in the day but he was smiling alot and had some good fun time in his gym etc.
Then we end up getting admitted to Christchurch Public's paediatric acute assessment!
Clare and Oscar stay the night and a drip is put on due to marginal dehydration and a few infected sore
on his bottom.
Jan 2: Syringed some saline into his nostrils to clear his nose - he wasn't feeding because he couldn't
breath through his nose while he was sucking.
